MTA has provided comprehensive environmental and geotechnical engineering services on behalf of McCormack Baron and Associates and the Jersey City Housing Authority at the award winning Lafayette Village residential development. Our assessment revealed environmental issues at the Brownfield site related to contaminated historic fill, shallow volatile organic compound impacted groundwater, abandoned underground storage tanks and chromate ore processing residue. In addition, there were site redevelopment issues related to buried deleterious debris, vapor intrusion and localized organic deposits. MTA prepared a Remedial Action Workplan that addressed the environmental and geotechnical redevelopment issues, including: soil reuse to minimize off-site disposal costs and enable slab-on-grade construction; vapor protection and monitoring; and design of a cost effective site cap. This unified approach enabled construction of a 124-unit residential community on the former 6-acre Brownfield site, which was awarded the USEPA Region 2 Phoenix Award in 2003. |
